Gardening Tips for January

Posted: Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Seeds • Spend some quality time in front of the fire with those seed catalogs and lay out plans for the summer’s vegetable garden. Once you’ve got your seeds, it’s time to plant some of those you’ll be starting indoors. Just follow the directions on the seed packet and time your planting accordingly, keeping in mind that the last spring frost date for Victoria is about April 19th.

Watch for an article about Victoria’s 17th Annual Seedy Saturday in Senior Living’s February issue! Seedy Saturday is a community seed and garden show where nurseries, mushroom folks, landscaping suppliers, gardeners and farmers interested in biodiversity and heritage and organic gardening buy and/or swap seeds, learn tips and meet friends.

Shrubs, trees, hedges and fruit trees • These can be planted right through the winter here in our mild climate.

Fruit trees and roses • Treat with dormant spray (oil and lime sulphur) two or three times between December and early February, when the plants have no leaves on them. Be careful of very early leaf buds on roses as these can easily be damaged. If your roses are already growing leafy new growth it is too late for dormant spray.

Sweet peas • Prepare an area for your summer sweet peas. Dig a ditch and fill it with leafy matter from disease free foliage and cover with soil. When it’s time to plant your sweet peas you will have the perfect mixture of decomposed leaves and soil in which to plant.
